Marketing Assistant, Graphic Designer, Motion Graphics

In the spring of 2016, I embarked on a four-month co-op placement with abm, a leading Canadian company headquartered in Richmond, BC. Dedicated to advancing life science research and drug development, abm is renowned for its commitment to innovation and cutting-edge technology.

During my tenure at abm, I was entrusted with a range of responsibilities that allowed me to contribute to various facets of the company’s promotional efforts and digital presence. A significant aspect of my role involved designing new brochures and capturing captivating images for promotional materials, leveraging my creative skills to effectively showcase abm’s products and services.

Additionally, I delved into the realm of multimedia production by conceptualizing, filming, and editing promotional videos. This hands-on experience not only honed my videography and editing skills but also deepened my understanding of visual storytelling as a powerful tool for engaging audiences and conveying complex scientific concepts.

Furthermore, I had the opportunity to lend my expertise to the development of new web pages, where I seamlessly integrated my knowledge of PHP and HTML to enhance user experience and functionality. This aspect of my role allowed me to merge my creative and technical skills, resulting in dynamic and interactive online content that effectively represented abm’s brand identity.

My co-op experience at abm was an invaluable journey that broadened my skill set, enriched my understanding of the life sciences industry, and reinforced my passion for creative expression and digital innovation. I am grateful for the opportunity to have contributed to abm’s mission of driving scientific progress and look forward to leveraging the skills and knowledge gained during my time there in future endeavors.

    Reflections

a motion graphic designer, providing me with invaluable insights into both creative design processes and scientific concepts. It was my first foray into applying my skills in a real work environment, and it offered a wealth of learning opportunities that enriched my skill set and broadened my understanding of science.

One of the most significant aspects of my time at abm was the opportunity to strengthen my proficiency as a motion graphic designer. Through hands-on projects and collaboration with colleagues, I honed my skills in visual storytelling and animation, elevating my capabilities to new heights.

However, the transition to working in a scientific setting presented its own set of challenges, particularly due to my lack of a science background. Understanding the technical terminology and concepts proved to be my biggest hurdle initially. To overcome this, I adopted a proactive approach, conducting thorough research and seeking clarification from supervisors whenever necessary. This not only enhanced my understanding of scientific principles but also underscored the importance of effective communication and collaboration in a multidisciplinary environment.

Working alongside another designer proved to be instrumental in fostering creativity and innovation. Through collaborative brainstorming sessions, we were able to bounce ideas off each other, resulting in richer and more impactful design solutions. Yet, there were also moments when I embraced solo exploration, allowing me to push the boundaries of my creativity and develop a deeper sense of self-expression as a designer.

Overall, my co-op experience at abm was a transformative journey that equipped me with valuable skills, expanded my knowledge base, and empowered me to thrive in a dynamic and challenging work environment. It laid the foundation for my continued growth as a designer and instilled in me a newfound appreciation for the intersection of design and science.
